TEDx Citation : Talks. (2023, June 13). A hostage negotiator on how to resolve conflict | Karleen Savage | TEDxValparaisoUniversity [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUF9sY4HvxY

Summary of the article:

The video, titled "A hostage negotiator on how to resolve conflict" takes us beyond the conventional battles and into our everyday lives. The narrator, an international conflict resolution consultant, gives a glimpse of her life; and also offers very interesting advice regarding conflict resolution. Her point is that we face the harshest confrontations with our family and friends; in those struggles there is no SWAT team backing us thus the game is high steaks. Speaker introduces five universal conflict resolution skills; curiosity is the theme linking them all together. Curiosity is important in conflict resolution, which she emphasizes. Research, in this case, is the key to conflict resolution. Three questions are then asked to assess curiosity in conflict:

  • Did you allow the other’s personal story to be independent of yours?
  • Did you want to hear their story without emotion or verbal response?
  • Did you make their story part of the solution?

The video demonstrates that if we inquire as to why another person holds that view and how they think it resolves conflict, we can change the way we approach problems. Curiosity is a means to discovering and solving problems. This shows how useful these skills have been in improving people’s relationships and in maintaining or even improving their personal ties. In short, the video shows that we need some conflict resolution abilities as well as a curiosity in order to understand and solve disputes every day. Curiousness is an active technique that can help us overcome confrontations in our everyday life and establish stronger and better ties with other people.

How the article relates to me:

Directly speaking, this video message focuses upon aspects of how an interview can assist us at resolving conflicts and it promises great benefits in our daily lives. It should be noted that conflict is inevitable in all kinds of interactions, may be at home, in the workplace and among friends. While they are bound to occur, these kinds of conflicts can be prevented using questioning as a mediation tool is instructed in the video. Openness to curiosity will help us to improve the quality of our communicative abilities and make us more understanding, patient, and empathic. Therefore we are able to handle misunderstandings better and create healthy relations. Moreover in terms of personal growth also bears fruit. It also enhances our resilient nature, making us more flexible and compassionate people.

In conclusion, being curious should become part of a new-found conflict management formula, or at least one of the key components in a new-found conflict management formula. it works towards relieve tension, building a common ground and developing firm and fulfilling relationships with the people around us. Curiosity helps us polish our communication skills and enrich our life, thus being a partner helping us solve puzzles, which is not surprising as our life is a puzzle of people communicating with one another.
